Construction named as key sector in government’s Industrial Strategy

October 20, 2017

The government’s recently published Industrial Strategy announced that construction would be one of four industries to get what they’re calling a new “sector deal.” The government will form new industry partnerships that are designed to boost productivity, employment, innovation, and skills within the construction sector.

The Industrial Strategy, entitled “Building a Britain fit for the future” was launched by business secretary Greg Clark and was announced after Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, promised an investment of £170 million in research and development (R&D).

As outlined in the Industrial Strategy, “the Construction Sector Deal will help build the houses, schools, hospitals, and major transport projects we need.” The deal will focus on three key areas: Procuring for Value, Industry-led Innovation, and Skills for the Future.

£34m will be allocated for the expansion of innovative construction training programmes across the country with the aim of transforming construction techniques which will improve efficiency. The report acknowledges the need for buildings to be constructed and operated more efficiently in a rapidly urbanising world; taking full advantage of emerging technologies to provide not only safer, healthier and more affordable places to live and work, but that also use significantly less energy to build and run.

RIBA chief executive, Alan Valance, welcomed the strategy, saying: “An effective UK-wide Industrial Strategy is vital as we navigate towards Brexit and beyond. Delivered alongside substantial investments in our lagging infrastructure, it has the potential to greatly improve productivity.”

The strategy also outlined the government’s intentions to implement a more deliberate and strategic approach to house and infrastructure planning alongside increased innovation and quality when it comes to new homes.

The deal has been made in conjunction with the government and the Construction Leadership Council, led by Andrew Wolstenholme.
